Sensual and colored figures by Richard Burlet

Sensual and colored figures by Richard Burlet

Considered an abstract-figurative artist, the paintings created by Richard Burlet are born of an inspiration that is French by inclination and Viennese by influence. The complex imagery of Burlet’s figurative paintings pays homage to a tradition in art that reigned supreme in Vienna in the late 1800s. The art, architecture and design of Vienna’s «Golden Age», and the highly praised works of Gustav Klimt, are the greatest influences to Burlet’s artwork.

Richard Burlet painting

Burlet’s paintings are richly colored compositions in collage and oil and each displays a brilliant pastiche of ornamental detail that does not simply embellish the art, but becomes its content. His palette often reflects his affinity for red and purple – strong colors – and he strives for «a contrast of colors, of heat, contrast between some delicate, graceful faces, and an intense and powerful set of colors.» For Burlet, the interplay of figure and background, flatness and depth, object and image is the key to heightening the experience of his creations. His paintings evoke a dreamlike, floating state in which fantasy liquefies the world, tinting and bending to its own desires. It is in this approach to his artwork that Burlet’s paintings have an affinity with the most classic of figurative studies while also harkening to the psychedelic nature of 1960s art and design.

Burlet’s sensual figurative works have an abstract quality achieved by his use of collage and heavy paint on canvas. There is flatness to the imagery, yet rich dimension is created by myriad colors laid one on top of another with 24-karat gold and silver leafing then applied giving the canvas tone and texture. He uses gold and silver «for it’s light – no color can compete with it. It is an element that naturally does not belong on the painting, and therefore is thrilling to try to include it.» Another «material» that Burlet works with is memories. «The more distant they are, the more interesting they get, because they are distorted by time and living. They reappear through certain colors, certain shapes, even if they remain hazy.» The art is at once classic and exotic, sensual and tame. The figures appear as if in a dream, the colors intertwine with collage to create both mood and a multi-dimensional surface.

When you look for peace
then the peace lies within you
When you search for peace
then it is not hard to find
When you want to keep peace alive
then you allow white doves to fly over you
When you make peace with others
then the whole world live in your heart
When you let peace be in the world
then you live in wonderful world
When you allow peace flow around the world
then your hateness will go and love will flow
When you open the door for peace
then peace welcome to your lives.
Let the peace prevail in our wonderful world

Macbeth (Film Review) | Seroword

Macbeth (Film Review) | Seroword

Rogues & Vagabonds

4.5 / 5 One of the most famous and familiar plays from Shakespeare, Macbeth is the bloody tale of one man’s prophesy driven quest to achieve power. It’s hard to come across anyone who doesn’t know the story of Macbeth; the play is studied in schools at early ages and has seen countless adaptations, however, this rendition by director Justin Kurzel offers an unforeseen amount to the renowned play.

Kurzel’s most obvious success here derives from the excellent cast that he has attracted to his film. With Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the lead roles and an extremely talented roster of actors supporting them, Shakespeare’s original dialogue truly comes alive with perfect delivery and emotion. Similar to the play, the entire film hinges on the performance of the actors, yet Kurzel is able to skilfully weave in dramatic battle scenes and also present a beautiful Scottish landscape with expert…

Tom Hiddleston in South Sudan: ‘Children deserve a chance of a childhood’

Tom Hiddleston in South Sudan: ‘Children deserve a chance of a childhood’

Tom Hiddleston in South Sudan: «Children deserve a chance of a childhood»

For the sake of every child in danger, our leaders must do more.

In conflict and crises, it is children who are hardest hit. I saw this for myself in South Sudan, on a visit to the country with Unicef earlier this year. South Sudan is a forgotten war, which strikes children with unforgivable brutality. Rape, forced recruitment and attacks on schools are becoming a daily part of their childhood.

South Sudan declared independence from Sudan in 2011, and has been riven by political and civil conflict since December 2013. The major cities have become war zones, with civilians fleeing to relative safety in rural areas. So many people, so many innocent children: displaced, desperate, starving.

Unicef UK supporter and award-winning actor Tom Hiddleston met children caught in conflict at a rapid response mission in South Sudan Unicef

Unicef UK supporter and award-winning actor Tom Hiddleston met children caught in conflict at a rapid response mission in South Sudan Unicef

The day before I was due to fly to South Sudan – in February this year – Unicef announced that at least 89 boys had been abducted while they were preparing to sit their school exams in Wau Shilluk, in Upper Nile state. These boys, some as young as 13, had been forcibly conscripted into armed militia.

Three days later, I found myself in the very same village, one of the most remote places I have ever seen. Walking around the desolate school, the destruction left in the wake of the militia’s violent interruption of the school day the previous weekend was still visible. The playground was empty, school desks had been overturned and doors were hanging off their hinges.

In one of the school-rooms, I met with 15-year-old John*, who had escaped abduction. Sitting on the floor together in the corner, he told me that he feared for his life, that everyone did. He told me: “we have a big problem and worry. The soldiers – they are killing the people”. But despite the immense danger, he still wanted to attend school and prepare for his exams.

In South Sudan, around 13,000 children have been recruited and are being used by all sides of the conflict, putting their lives at risk and irreversibly changing the fortunes of these children. I met a Unicef aid worker in the Upper Nile region, who had met with boys desperate to go home, but bound by the fear the militia had instilled in them. Children face an impossible choice – kill or be killed. For some, these children may seem a lost cause. But not for Unicef who, as well as delivering vital water and health care to children in South Sudan, are working to release and rehabilitate children forced to fight.

In Jonglei state, days later, I met hundreds of boys who had recently been released by an armed group called the Cobra faction, living in a Unicef Interim Care Centre, awaiting reunification with their families.  They receive shelter, food, education, clothing and basic health care, as well as counselling.

One of these boys, 16-year-old Afrikey*, on the day of our visit was being reunited with his family for the first time in over two years. His conscription had left emotional scars. He had seen things a boy of his age should never have to see. He had the far-off stare of a much older man – a depth in his face. I witnessed him being reunited with his mother: some hope amid the devastation.

To this day, there is no official record of what happened to the 89 boys in Wau Shilluk. I cannot help but wonder where they are, what they are doing, and whether their families will see them again.

It is for these children, for boys like John and Afrikey, that I am backing Unicef UK’s new campaign, which calls on the Government to prioritise protecting children from violence in crises.  Children, whether those journeying as refugees through Europe or living in conflicts like South Sudan, deserve a chance of a childhood.

For the sake of every child in danger, our leaders must step up and do more. The public can support Unicef UK’s call for the Prime Minister to protect children from violence in emergencies at unicef.uk/protect

Golden hour Thames

mikeosbornphoto

The nights in London are now long and dark with the onset of winter. Just a short while ago, summer was breathing its last gasp on the embankment of the River Thames close to the iconic and imposing Palace of Westminster. The building caught the last vestiges of sunlight, while people went about their business – tourists took photographs as joggers passed by. There was even a wedding shoot taking place. Most noticeable of all was the green leaves of the trees, lush and intact. How different things are now…
