The Last Island

013-cat-people-theredlist

Cat People is a 1942 film directed by Jacques Tourneur. The original screenplay, written by DeWitt Bodeen, was based on Val Lewton’s short story The Bagheeta published in 1930. The film stars Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Jane Randolph and Tom Conway.

This is the story of Irena, a young Serbian woman in Manhattan, who believes that, because of an ancient curse, any physical intimacy with the man she loves will turn her into a feline predator.

An extraordinary work of photography by Nicholas Musuraca.

Friday Night Films: “The Ladykillers” by Alexander Mackendrick

The Last Island

Here’sone of my favourite fims. A masterpiece. A must see.

the_ladykillers-664308624-largeThe Ladykillers is a 1955 British black comedyfilm made by Ealing Studios. Directed byAlexander Mackendrick, it stars Katie Johnson, Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Danny Green and Jack Warner.

American William Rose wrote the screenplay, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay and won the BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay.

Sinopsis

Mrs. Louisa Alexandra Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) is a sweet and eccentric old widow who lives alone with her raucous parrots in a gradually subsiding lopsided house, built over the entrance to a railway tunnel in Kings Cross, London. With nothing to occupy her time and an active imagination, she is a frequent visitor to the local police station where she reports fanciful suspicions regarding neighbourhood activities…

Friday Night Films: “The Haunting” by Robert Wise

The Last Island

the-haunting-movie-poster-19631
Long before The Legend of Hell House (1973) or Ghost Story(1981) or Poltergeist (1982), Robert Wise directed a creepy little tale about the supernatural called The Haunting (1963), which was based on the Shirley Jackson novel, The Haunting of Hill House. In the film, Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson), a professor of anthropology with a deep interest in the occult, decides to investigate an infamous mansion with a long history of unexplained psychic phenomena. Joining him in his experiment are Luke Sanderson (Russ Tamblyn) who stands to inherit the house from his family, and two volunteers, Eleanor Vance (Julie Harris) and Theodora (Claire Bloom) who possess unusual extrasensory sensitivities.

Though set in New England, The Haunting was actually filmed in England with the interior scenes being shot at the MGM studio in Borehamwood. “The exterior was a several-hundred-years-old manor house out in the country, about ten miles from Stratford-on-Avon,”…

Friday Night Films: “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” by Robert Stevenson

The Last Island

Angela Lansbury made me cry this week singing “Beauty and The Beast at Lincoln Center in New York. She’s simply WONDERFUL so I decided to choose one of her films for this Friday. Love Bednocks and Broomsticks so here it is.  Enjoy ☺

Bedknobs and Broomsticks is a 1971 British-American musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions. It is based upon the books The Magic Bed-Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and Bonfires and Broomsticks (1945) by English children’s author Mary Norton. The film combines live action and animation.

When young Charlie, Carrie and Paul move to a small village during World War II, they discover their host, Miss Price (Angela Lansbury), is an apprentice witch! Although her early attempts at magic create hilarious results, she successfully casts a traveling spell on an ordinary bedknob, and they fly to the fantastic, animated…

Doctor Strange’s visit is closer. Be welcome.

Doctor Strange’s visit is closer. Be welcome.

Doctor Strange,’ no love at the end of this one, follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, learns the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the screen adaptation of the Marvel Comic: “It’s very important for me to bring in a level of humour, that maybe needs a bit more work on in the script, or isn’t there in the script, and also wasn’t necessarily there in the comics. Yes, he takes himself seriously and we need that for the fall he suffers, which is major before his rise to becoming a superhero, but he’s got to take the audience on a ride. You’ve got to care about the guy – not just because he’s having all kinds of trauma inflicted on his mind and body, but also because he’s fun, he’s good company.”

Directed by Scott Derrickson the film also stars Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen.
